High blood pressure – the vegetable you should avoid or risk deadly hypertension

High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than a quarter of all adults in the UK. But, you could lower your risk of developing hypertension by avoiding potatoes, it’s been claimed.

High blood pressure – which is also known as hypertension – puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.

The condition could lead to some deadly complications, including strokes and heart attacks.

It could be caused by eating an unhealthy diet, or by not doing enough exercise.

You could be raising your chances of deadly hypertension if you regularly eat potatoes, it’s been revealed.

Eating four or more servings of potatoes every week could be raising your chances of high blood pressure by around 11 percent, compared with people that eat less than one serving per month, scientists have claimed.

But swapping just one daily serving of baked, boiled or mashed potato with a non-starchy vegetable could lower the risk of hypertension by up to seven percent.

Beetroot is an ideal substitute for potato, according to Healthspan medical director, Dr Sarah Brewer.

It contains nitrates, which help to dilate blood vessels, and subsequently lower blood pressure.

“Eating four or more servings of potatoes a week is associated with a significantly increased risk of hypertension,” Dr Brewer told Express Health.

“Beetroot are one of the best foods for lowering blood pressure due to their high content of nitrates.

“Boil beetroot whole, in their skins, to avoid losing their medicinal benefits into the cooking water.

“Concentrated beetroot juice is available for dilution for you daily glass of goodness. Beetroot crisps are also available as a healthy snack.”

Meanwhile, you could also lower your risk of hypertension by simply eating more yoghurt, it’s been claimed.

Yoghurt may protect against high blood pressure due to its high calcium, magnesium and potassium content. All three of these nutrients have antihypertensive effects.

Regularly eating yoghurt could lower your risk of high blood pressure by around 20 percent, scientists have claimed.

If you’re not a big fan of yoghurt, you could always take probiotic supplements, which work in a similar way.
