The entertainment industry may have been put on an extended pause along with the rest of the world this year, but actor Liam Hemsworth has spent his 2020 getting into the best shape of his life. “Exercise and fitness is a big thing for me to just feel balanced and levelheaded,” he said earlier this year in his Men’s Health cover interview.
Hemsworth shared a look at his intense sled pull training with athlete and adventurer Ross Edgley back in October, and now Edgley has posted a video to YouTube which includes a brief breakdown (along with some footage) of one of their workouts, a session geared around functional fitness.
“The whole idea is work capacity, and your body’s ability to perform and positively training at a given intensity and duration,” Edgley explains. “There’s also that whole idea of strength training as a modality, just helping ligaments, tendons, making you a more robust and resilient athlete.”
When programming workouts for this kind of general physical preparedness, Hemsworth and Edgley also incorporate elements of strongman training, and plyometric exercises.
In addition to keeping up his physically grueling training sessions, Hemsworth has become a proponent of ice baths as a means of recovery, which he says help him bounce back from his toughest workouts. Edgley admits to being in awe of Hemsworth’s resilience; the actor will regularly surf for up to 4 hours in the morning as a form of conditioning work, take an ice bath, and then hit a strength session that afternoon without showing any signs of fatigue.
“I’ve never seen somebody do muscleups so casually for a warmup,” says Edgley, praising Hemsworth’s commitment and discipline as an athlete as much as an actor. “You never really see the work ethic and the hours under the iron that he’s putting in.”
