All of the cases have been identified and traced, but it serves as a stark reminder that we’re not out of the woods just yet.
If you do become infected with coronavirus, you’re unlikely to know whether it’s the original strain, or the new variant, according to Medicine Direct’s Superintendent pharmacist, Hussain Abdeh.
The symptoms for both strains of the virus are very similar, and they can both be asymptomatic, he added.

“So far, research has shown that the new Brazilian variant of the virus shares the same key symptoms that are already synonymous with COVID-19,” Abdeh told Express Health.
“The symptoms of this variant are a continuous cough, a high temperature and losing one’s sense of taste or smell.
“However, it is important to bear in mind that you can still be asymptomatic with this strain of the virus, just as you can be with the original UK variants.
“It is still very early days in the analysis of the Brazilian variant and it’s symptoms, therefore people should be extra vigilant in making sure they are socially distancing, washing their hands regularly and checking for any symptoms that may be a sign of COVID-19.”
The three most important signs of infection are a new, continuous cough, a high fever, and a loss of smell or taste.
If you develop any of these symptoms, you should get tested for Covid straight away.
If your test comes back negative, you can return to ‘normal’ lockdown life.
But if the test is positive, you should self-isolate for at least 10 days.
Some patients have reported a number of other symptoms linked to the coronavirus infection, however.
Tiredness, unusual rashes, night sweats, and diarrhoea could all be signs of the infection.
More than 4.2million people have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK over the past 12 months.
But, almost 22million people have now received their first dose of the Covid vaccine.
