Tom Critchley, who carved out a career spotting sports stars, was a corporal in the Royal Engineers. He was diagnosed with early-stage rectal cancer in April 2022.
The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester soon offered Tom, 76 – from Astley near Leigh – the chance to join the Aphrodite trial.

It involves higher doses of radiotherapy being given with chemo, meaning patients are spared surgery and often a stoma, too.
By February, the club and bar singer was given the all-clear, while today his scans continue to show no signs of cancer.
