Dr Amir says hay fever worse because of more birch trees
If you are one of the millions of Brits suffering from hay fever symptoms right now, you might be keen to abate the pesky symptoms.
An allergy to pollen can lead to itchy eyes and ears, headaches, sniffling, and generally feeling unwell.
“Hay fever, asthma, food allergies and eczema are related allergic conditions, and the tendency to develop them seems to run in families,” said Dr Henderson.
“This inherited predisposition is called atopy, and it means your body produces a certain type of antibody in response to allergens which isn’t produced in non-allergic people.”
Dr Henderson added: “It can also mean some people get severe hay fever symptoms whereas others only suffer mildly.”

While it may sound a bit odd, rubbing some petroleum jelly inside your nostrils could help prevent more severe hay fever symptoms.
Dr Henderson explained that by doing so, you are preventing pollen from entering your nasal passages.
Another tip is to “remove house and garden plants that may trigger your hay fever”.
The doctor also recommended drying your clothes inside the home, even though the sun is shining.

If you do put your washing outside, “pollen may get trapped in the fibres of clothes and bed linen”, he cautioned.
And while the weather might be toasty, Dr Henderson advised you to “keep doors and windows closed”.
While you might be tempted to let in some fresh air into your home, this could bring in pollen.
Dr Henderson also shared the notion that you could be suffering from a cold, rather than hay fever.

“Symptoms of a summer cold can include a sore throat, coughing, and sometimes a high temperature with a nasal discharge that may be green or yellow in colour,” he said.
“Hay fever usually involves itchy or watery eyes, and any runny nose is usually clear in colour.”
As for additional tips to help ease hay fever symptoms, Dr Henderson recommended:
- Using Olbas nasal spray
- Wear wrap-around sunglasses
- Take a shower after coming in from outside.
