The BBC News at Six host was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in 2014. When the disease spread, he endured 17 rounds of chemotherapy, before returning to the nation’s screens in 2015.
The cancer came back in 2017 ‑ and yesterday his agent said doctors will need to hit the tumour “hard and fast”.
The father of two, 65, will undergo “a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy” for several months, he added.
The Bafta winner’s campaign for cancer screenings to be offered to over-50s in England was victorious in 2018.
Last year he said: “I’m not going to spend the time I’ve got worrying. I want to spend [it] living and doing the things I want to do and enjoying my family and friends.”
