Reese Witherspoon's 1996 Selfie With Paul Rudd Shows Just How Far Eyebrows Have Come

Reese Witherspoon's signature look is so classic and so consistent, it's easy to forget that she, too, once participated in some of the biggest (and sometimes regrettable) trends of the 1990s. But for those who've dismissed the actor's appearances in Cruel Intentions, Election, Pleasantville, and the like, let me direct you to her latest Instagram post. On September 22, Witherspoon shared a picture that she took of herself and America's other sweetheart, Paul Rudd, all the way back in 1996.

"Wait a second… did #PaulRudd and I take the 'Selfie' in 1996?" she captioned the old-school film photo of the two of them. In the photo, Rudd looks exactly the same as he does now because let's face it, that guy ages backward (or has a time machine). But Witherspoon looks like a completely different person, if only because of her makeup. There seems to be a smattering of light blue eye shadow across her lids, and her cherry-red lipstick is defined by a much darker lip line. Her hair is cropped out of the photo, but I can only hope it's done up in some spiky, Gwen Stefani-inspired updo.

The main attraction of this photo, however, is undoubtedly Witherspoon's eyebrows. Like almost everyone else did back then, she plucked her brows until they were super thin, had razor-sharp tails, and were widely spaced apart. Also like many celebrities of the 1990s, Witherspoon's had a long and drastic brow glow-up over the past couple of decades. Now, her ash-blonde brows are full, well-groomed, and fluffy (I can only assume that someone of her status has endless access to the best brow products and treatments). Though I don't think the '90-style brow shape is making a comeback any time soon, I'll gladly stock up on all the dark lip liner, flavored lip gloss, and blue eye shadow I can get my hands on.
