Dentist reveals how much toothpaste you should use
Black triangles between your teeth refer to the empty spaces or gaps that can develop between teeth, often near the gemlike, creating a triangular shape when viewed from the front.
These spaces may appear as dark areas because they expose the underlying oral tissues and may trap food particles, plaque, or debris, making them more noticeable.
While they’re not a sign of any serious health problems, Dr Abdul Azizi, principal dentist of Harley Private Dentist Clinic, said they may be linked to the likes of gum disease or gum recession.
He said: “They are not necessarily a sign of poor hygiene, as various factors, including genetics and tooth shape, can contribute to their development. However, they can trap food particles and impact oral hygiene and aesthetics, which may warrant dental attention for cosmetic or preventive reasons.”

Dr Azizi listed several potential reasons for black triangles between your teeth:
1. Gum recession
Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue that normally covers the roots of teeth begins to pull away, exposing part of the tooth’s root. Dr Azizi said: “This can create a gap or black triangle between the teeth.”
2. Bone loss
Periodontal (gum) disease can lead to the loss of bone support around the teeth, which can result in the gums pulling away from the teeth, leaving open spaces.
3. Tooth shape and size
Variations in both size, shape, and alignment can create gaps or black triangles, particularly if the teeth are not perfectly adjacent to one another.
4. Age-related changes
As we age, changes in gum tissue and bone density can contribute to black triangles.
5. Orthodontic treatment
In some cases, orthodontic treatment, like braces or aligners, may alter the position of teeth and create small spaces or black triangles.

Can black triangles be prevented?
Preventing black triangles between teeth can be challenging, said Dr Azizi, but several measures can help minimise the risk:
Good oral hygiene – maintain regular brushing and flossing to prevent gum disease, which can lead to gum recession and black triangles.
Regular dental check-ups – visit your dentist for routine check-ups to detect and address early signs of gum disease and gum recession.
Orthodontic treatment – correcting misaligned teeth through orthodontic treatment can help prevent the formation of black triangles.
Gentle flossing – Use proper flossing techniques to avoid injuring your gum tissue, as aggressive flossing can contribute to gum recession.
Avoid smoking – smoking is a risk factor for gum disease, so quitting or avoiding smoking can help maintain gum health.
Manage underlying health conditions – certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, can increase the risk of gum problems, so managing them can be preventive.
How can you fix them?
Black triangles can be aesthetically concerning for some people as they can trap food, affect speech, and potentially lead to oral hygiene challenges, said Dr Azizi.
He added: “If you are bothered by black triangles between your teeth, you can discuss potential treatment options with a dentist or orthodontist.”
These may include:
1. Dental bonding – using tooth-coloured resin to fill in the gaps and create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.
2. Dental veneers – thin porcelain shells that can be used to cover the front of the teeth, closing the gaps.
3. Orthodontic treatment – in some cases, orthodontics can be used to move teeth and close the gaps.
4. Gum grafting – for cases with severe gum recession, a gum graft can be performed to replace lost gum tissue and fill in the black triangles.
Dr Azizi advised: “The best approach to address black triangles between your teeth will depend on the underlying cause and your specific oral health and cosmetic concerns. It’s important to consult with a dentist or orthodontist to determine the most appropriate solution for your individual situation.”
