Im a pharmacist and I want to share the rather unusual symptom of diabetes

Dr Amir lists diabetes symptoms

“I wanted to highlight a rather unusual symptom of diabetes – fruity-smelling breath,” said Abdeh.

Fruity breath can indicate high ketone levels, Abdeh said, which requires urgent attention by a medical professional.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) pointed out that these acids, known as ketones, occur when the body is breaking down fat for fuel.

If the body doesn’t have enough insulin to break down sugars in the blood, then the cells are starved of energy.

To compensate, the liver breaks down fat for fuel – and the by-product is ketones.

Abdeh said this reaction could “occur if you have both type 1 or type 2 diabetes”.

“You may have a very dry mouth at the same time and also experience an extreme thirst,” added Abdeh.

“You might find that you need to urinate more often than normal; this can also be a sign of high blood sugar levels.”

For those who suffer from low blood sugars, mood swings might be expected.

“If you are feeling irritable, aggressive, or confused for no known reason, these may be signs of low blood sugar,” said Abdeh.

“Some people may also experience coordination problems or find it hard to make decisions.

“Some people with low blood sugar may also feel mild euphoria, which may feel like you are a bit drunk.”

Abdeh added: “Alternatively if you have high blood sugar levels, you may feel nervous or fatigued.

“The changes in blood sugar levels can have an impact on your mood, which normally goes away when your levels return to normal.”

Anybody experiencing unexplained mood swings, or fruity-smelling breath, should book an appointment with their doctor.

If undiagnosed at present, discussing your symptoms with your doctor can lead to a helpful diagnosis and treatment plan.

Should you already have known diabetes, speaking to your doctor is advised to get youe blood sugar levels under control.
