Prince Louis is typically known for being a total wild card in public and is usually the subject of hilarious photos. He is always caught looking totally unimpressed or “misbehaving” (as then-4-year-olds are prone to do). But the fourth in line to the throne just celebrated his fifth birthday at the end of April, and his official birthday portraits are absolutely heart-melting.
On April 22, the day before Prince Louis’ birthday, the Instagram account for the Prince and Princess of Wales posted a carousel of photos with the caption, “Someone’s turning 5 tomorrow… 🎂 🥳 A very happy birthday to Prince Louis. 📸@milliepilkingtonphotography.”
Prince Louis — dressed in a blue sweater over a collared shirt — flashes a genuine ear-to-ear smile in one of the shots. Kate Middleton and Prince William are now sending that photo and thank-you letters to supporters who sent in birthday messages. One such supporter posted her note from Kensington Palace on Instagram.
“Thank you for the very thoughtful message which you sent for Prince Louis’ fifth birthday,” the card on official letterhead said. “Prince Louis had a fantastic day, and your message was greatly appreciated by The Prince and Princess who send you their very best wishes.”

First He’s Sour, Then He’s Sweet
Prince Louis’ birthday portraits prove that even though he has a side eye that rivals that of his sister Princess Charlotte and his grandma Princess Diana, he also has the most heartwarming smile. It’s the duality for us.

The Young Prince’s Nickname
Of course, Prince Louis isn’t called by his formal title at home. He, just like many members of the royal family, has a special nickname. His family calls him “Lou-Bugs.” How sweet is that?

Another Royal Thank You
Prince Archie was gifted a bicycle from the British owners of a local bike shop for his fourth birthday. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry then asked that a thank-you letter be sent on their behalf.
“Please accept their sincere thanks for the thoughtful gift you sent to Prince Archie for his fourth birthday,” it said. “The bike has brought much joy, and is most appreciated by the family.”
