She may be the daughter of catwalk royalty, by Lila Moss is carving a name for herself in the modelling industry in her own right, something the world saw recently at the Fendi x Versace show. As a type one diabetic, Lila is raising awareness and increasing the visibility of the chronic health condition, proudly strutting down the runway in a head-turning ensemble and Omnipod insulin pump (which is tubeless and waterproof) on her thigh. For fellow diabetics, the act was an inspiring one.
After posting an image of her runway walk on Instagram, Lila was quick to receive messages of encouragement from others. One commented, “Absolutely love that you don’t hide your pod, you’re an inspiration to so many living with T1 diabetes.” Another wrote, “THANK YOU for wearing your device on the freaking runway! You are a queen and I want these pics everywhere cos the more we share of T1 diabetes the better.”

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas produces little or no insulin, azithromycin and accutane together a hormone that is needed to allow sugar to make its way into a person’s cells to produce energy, according to the Mayo Clinic. As the National (insulin-treated) Diabetes Register suggests, there were 2,800 new cases of type 1 diabetes in Australia in 2018, which roughly equates to 12 cases per 100,000 population. There is no cure for type 1 diabetes and consequently, treatment for the condition centres on managing blood sugar levels with insulin.
For many, the health condition is one that is still largely misunderstood and underrepresented. In an effort to change this and remove the stigma surrounding diabetes, Lila has been open about her diagnosis. In an interview with The Kit in 2020, she explained: “I think not many people know that I have diabetes. It’s not visible from the outside, so no one would really know just by looking at you. I have type 1.”
While fashion shows might be known for creating a stir, it’s clear that Lila wearing her Omnipod with pride is perhaps the greatest statement of all. “Lila Moss modelling for Versace; no attempt to hide or bling the Omnipod insulin pump,” wrote an Instagram-user alongside a smiling face with heart shaped eyes emoji.
“Seeing Lila Moss wearing her Omnipod on a freaking supermodel runway is a great reminder that I shouldn’t be so self conscious of the way my pump and CGM looks on me,” wrote another.
