The 38-year-old athlete must be incredibly fit to do what he does. There’s no doubt he works out often and eats right. However, Sir Mo Farah isn’t superhuman, and he’s not immune to a bacterial infection. “I had a tooth taken out because it was chipped, and it got infected,” he explained to The Guardian in 2014. “I was in a bit of pain, but went for a run, and when I came back from a run, I literally collapsed on the bathroom floor, completely knocked out.”

When Sir Mo regained consciousness, he rang his training partner for help, who called for an ambulance after seeing how bad Mo really was.

“I had to be airlifted to the main hospital as they thought something was going on with my heart – it was just crazy,” he recalled.

“I was in hospital for four days and it was scary, but these things happen and so I missed quite a lot of running.”

A Dental abscess

“A dental abscess is a collection of pus that can form inside the teeth, in the gums or in the bone that holds the teeth in place,” the NHS explained.

It’s caused by a bacterial infection and requires dental intervention.

This is because the dental abscess will not go away on its own and can spread to other body parts.

There are a wide range of symptoms that are indicative of a dental abscess, such as sudden and intense throbbing pain.

Over time, the tooth ache may worsen and spread to the ear, jaw, or neck on the same side as the infection.

The pain typically feels worse when you lie down, which can disturb your sleep.

Other signs of a dental abscess include:

  • Redness and swelling in your face
  • A tender, discoloured or loose tooth
  • Shiny, red and swollen gums
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold food and drink
  • Bad breath or an unpleasant taste in your mouth

“If the infection spreads, you may also develop a high temperature (fever) and feel generally unwell,” added the NHS.

While waiting to see a dentist, painkillers such as ibuprofen may be useful.

In the dentist’s chair, the dental abscess will be treated by removing the source of infection and draining the pus away.

Depending on the severity of the infection, treatment can include:

  • Root canal
  • Extraction
  • Incision and drainage

All of these procedures will be done under local anaesthetic to numb the mouth.

More extensive treatment might be carried out under general anaesthetic, where you are put asleep.

What causes a dental abscess?

“The mouth is full of bacteria, which forms a sticky film on the teeth called plaque,” explained the NHS.

“If you don’t keep the mouth clean, acids produced by the bacteria in plaque can damage your teeth and gums.”

The risk of a dental abscess increases if you have:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Consume lots of sugary or starchy food and drinks
  • An injury to the teeth or gums
  • A weakened immune system
