In order to accelerate vaccine development: the EU is to adopt the exception scheme for Covid-19-medicines

The Corona-pandemic keeps the world in suspense: More than 12 million people were infected with the novel Coronavirus, 198.613 of them in Germany. The United States reported almost daily new record numbers.

The EU sets limited conditions, to accelerate the development of a Corona vaccine. Like the Council, the member States announced on Tuesday evening, will be tested from next Saturday on Covid-19-medicinal products containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) without prior environmental impact assessment clinically. In addition, it is clarified that the scheme shall also apply if member States want to allow the use of not yet been officially approved Covid-19-medicinal products containing genetically modified organisms.

Federal Minister of health, Jens Spahn (CDU), commented: "This regulation will ensure that clinical trials can start in the EU without delay, and that no valuable time is lost." A vaccine against Covid-19 will be urgently needed.

The new EU regulation applies, as long as the world health organization Covid-19 regarded as a pandemic, or as long as a decision of the Commission is that she has a health crisis situation due to Covid-19.
