Missed referrals mean an estimated 19,500 people have not been diagnosed, the CF health consultancy and Institute for Public Policy Research think tank found.

Due to Covid, 15 percent fewer people got a referral, while endoscopies fell 37 percent, MRI scans by 25 percent and CT scans 10 percent.

The report says that if hospitals offer five percent more treatments than pre-Covid levels, the backlog would not be cleared until 2033.

A 15 percent rise on pre-Covid levels, however, would see it cleared by next year.

But researchers said the focus should not merely be on sorting the backlog ‑ as the UK has poor cancer outcomes compared with similar countries.

Chris Thomas, IPPR research fellow, said returning cancer care to its pre-Covid state was “not sufficiently ambitious”.
