Last month, Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed that he had assigned himself an ambitious weight loss challenge: “I am going to get back to 218. I am going to conquer March. Who is with me?” he wrote in his inaugural newsletter, which he announced would become a forum for sharing stories and advice.
Yesterday, in his second newsletter to date, Arnold provided an update on his progress, revealing that he’s now just five pounds shy of his target thanks in part to stepping up his workouts and reining in his diet.
“I doubled down on my workouts and bike rides and cut out the bread this month and I’m almost at my goal weight of 218—well, to be totally honest, I actually still have 5 lbs to go, so I’m not there yet,” he wrote, adding that he’s been flattered by some of the tabloid coverage about his “toned biceps.” (Schwarzenegger also revealed his “pump of the month”: His go-to seated chest press.)
In addition to bike workouts and, of course, weightlifting, Schwarzenegger shared that he’s been skiing regularly for an added dose of strength and cardio work. “It’s so important to get your regular exercise, but also to participate in activities that make you happy and remind you why you train, even though somehow my thighs are always destroyed after a skiing weekend,” he wrote.
If you’re not currently subscribed, the entire newsletter is worth a read: Among other things, Schwarzenegger includes some great stories about hanging out with legends like Muhammad Ali, how he stayed motivated to hit his goals in his 20s, and why he takes inspiration from Miles Taylor, a strength athlete with cerebral palsy who is crushing stereotypes in the gym.
