With over half (58%) of Aussies finding it easier to lose weight when doing it together, Erica and Andreas wanted to give the ‘Diet Buddy’ system a go after comments from family left them embarrassed and uncomfortable. They had also developed serious medical issues like diabetes, high blood pressure and fatty liver.
From tipping the scales at 111kg, Erica and Andreas, lost over 100kg together. Here’s how they did it.
Erica’s relationship with food
“When I was in primary and early high school I was so involved in sports, such as tennis, dance/aerobics/gymnastics, neurontin 600 mg picture and netball. As I got older, I lost interest and that’s when I started gaining weight to the point where I had lost control.
“While I had tried a lot of different diets to try and manage my weight, I could not maintain it. As well as this, I come from Greek heritage so at all functions and celebrations, food was so important, and it was always in abundance. I never watched my calories until I started the 1:1 Diet which taught me to be more aware of my preparation of food. I’ve also learnt about to read food labels so I can maintain my weight.”
The turning point
“I had been thinking about losing weight for a little while but didn’t want to do the same diets I had tried before. I could also feel it in myself that I was no longer comfortable with my body. The icing on the cake was when we went on a family holiday to Greece and were met with comments from family who were concerned about our size. As well as this, our doctor had diagnosed us with diabetes, high blood pressure, reflux, and fatty liver.”
The process
“I saw a girl on Instagram lose weight successfully on the 1:1 Diet and thought we had nothing to lose. So, I convinced Andreas to come with me to our first appointment and we never looked back.”
“We started the 1:1 Diet in September 2019 and by the time COVID hit, had not reached our goal so we stayed strong, never missed an appointment with our consultant and reached out goals in August 2020. Since then, we’ve been in maintenance and have kept the weight off.”
A typical day
“I was on Step 1 which included four products a day, while Andreas opted for three products and a cooked dinner, alongside our son. While it was hard for the first few weeks to cook dinner for them, I was getting myself into a routine.
“One of the advantages of doing the 1:1 Diet was that there is very little physical activity required. Andreas did go for 5km walks in the evening which helped him lose the weight faster, he now runs 10km per night and does Taekwondo 4 nights a week. I don’t exercise too much, mainly calorie counting to stay on track.”
Team work
“By doing The 1:1 Diet together, we were able to support each other through various temptations and motivated each other. It was a lifestyle change that we needed to have for ourselves and our child.”
