In some lovely news this Monday morning – it has been confirmed that the Duchess of Sussex has given birth to her second child with Prince Harry!
While we love a bit of baby news to start the day, this one comes a little sweeter: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, who welcomed their second child, a baby girl, have also gifted us with two very special royal nods…
The pair released a statement on their Archewell website, saying: “On June 4th, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili. She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe. Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family.”
Here’s what we know so far:
The name
The baby, who was born overnight, has been named Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. The name makes reference to both her grandmother, Princess Diana, and her great grandmother, the Queen (Lilibet was the Queen’s family nickname and the name Prince Philip used to call her).
“Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet,” the couple explained.
“Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honour her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.
The details
The baby was born just before midday and weighs 3.5kg.
“It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world,” the couple said in a statement.
“Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11.40am in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California.
“She weighed 7lbs 11oz (3.5kg). Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home.”

The godparents
Some of the biggest names in Hollywood are being tipped as possible godparents to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s newborn daughter after the couple welcomed Lilibet Diana.
According to The Sun, Oprah Winfrey is not the only strong woman who could make the cut as godmother to Lilibet, with TV host Gayle King and tennis superstar Serena Williams also being tipped as contenders.
TV host King has become a mouthpiece for the couple – revealing in April it was “no secret” Harry and William’s relationship was “strained”.
The gifts
The couple have also asked anyone wishing to send a present to instead “support or learn more” about organisations working for women and girls.”
The response
According to a statement, the Queen and her family are “delighted” at the birth of a daughter to her grandson.
“The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been informed and are delighted with the news of the birth of a daughter for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” a palace spokeswoman said.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also sent his congratulations.
“Many congratulations to The Duke & Duchess of Sussex on the birth of their daughter,” Johnson wrote on Twitter.
As for Meghan’s father Thomas Markle, even he told Sun Online that he’s “very pleased that my daughter and my new granddaughter had a successful delivery.
“I wish them all my love and the best of luck.”
