Arthritis: Doctor gives advice on best foods to help ease pain

Arthritis affects people of all ages, including children. There are lots of different types of arthritis. The symptoms you experience will vary depending on the type you have. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most common forms of the condition.

Some general symptoms you may experience include:

  • Weakness and muscle wasting.

Research has now revealed a fruit which helps people who suffer with arthritis.

Pineapple juice has been described as an antidote for the condition and also has anti-inflammatory benefits.

The study found that the fruit, which can also be consumed as a juice, is a good source of vitamin C, high fibre and an enzyme called bromelain, which can decrease levels of pain and swelling.

The research carried out concluded that bromelain has an anti-inflammatory effect and has been used before to help with sports injuries.

Eating fresh pineapple or drinking the juice every day has proven to be more beneficial than fruit supplements as the organic ingredients found in the fresh fruit, can help with pain too.

Joint flexibility and overall mobility increased, according to the researchers, when the organic compounds found in pineapple were released into the body.

The study, published in Arthritis Research in Therapy Journal, found that bromelain was more effective than pain relief bought in a shop or pharmacy.

According to the NHS: “It is very important to eat a healthy, balanced diet if you have arthritis.

“Eating healthily will give you all the nutrients you need to maintain a healthy weight.”

The health service also advised that your diet should consist of a variety of foods from all five good groups, these are fruits and vegetables, starchy foods, meat, fish, eggs and beans and milk and dairy foods – to help reduce pain.

“If you’re overweight, losing weight can really help you cope with arthritis. Too much weight places excess pressure on the joints in your hips, knees, ankles and feet, leading to increased pain and mobility problems,” the NHS said.

Osteoarthritis occurs when the tissue between the joints becomes worn.

“Osteoarthritis is the most common type in the UK, affecting nine million people alone. It is also most common in women and people with a family history of the condition,” said the NHS.

“But it can occur at any age as a result of an injury or be associated with other joint-related conditions, such as gout or rheumatoid arthritis.”

Osteoarthritis initially affects the smooth cartilage lining of the joint. This makes the movement more difficult, leading to pain and stiffness.

Currently, bromelain is available over-the-counter as a health supplement and is commonly used to treat acute inflammation and sports injuries.

This substance may be used as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with other medications, whether in the topical or oral route.

The NHS advises to speak with your GP before you decide to take bromelain, rather than natural pineapple juice, as the supplement may enhance the effect of certain drugs such as antibiotics, sedatives and anti-seizure medications.
