Supplements are used for a number of different health ailments. Vitamins in particular play a vital role in the body’s mechanism therefore lacking in them could cause conditions such as hair loss. With this in mind, what is the best supplement for hair loss?

When a person experiences low levels of vitamin D in the body it can be often linked to alopecia.

Vitamin D is thought to play a role in hair production.

The essential vitamin is metabolised in the skin by keratinocytes.

These are skin cells that process keratin, a protein in hair, nails, and skin.

When the body doesn’t have enough vitamin D, keratinocytes in hair follicles have trouble regulating hair growth and shedding.

One study explored this hypothesis further.

The study noted: “Vitamin D was recently reported to be important in cutaneous immune modulation as well as calcium regulation and bone metabolism.

“The biological actions of vitamin D3 derivatives include regulation of epidermal cell proliferation and differentiation and modulation of cytokine production.

“These effects might explain the efficacy of vitamin D3 derivatives for treating alopecia.

“Hair follicles are highly sensitive to hormones. Vitamin D is a hormone that plays an important role in calcium homeostasis, immune regulation, and cell growth and differentiation.

“Topical application of vitamin D might play a role in restoration of hair cycle dysfunction in alopecia.”

A 2017 review in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences also found that low vitamin D levels have been linked to excess hair shedding, alopecia and female pattern hair loss.

A 2019 study in the Indian Dermatology Online Journal found vitamin D deficiencies could worsen hair loss over time.

And a 2016 study from the International Journal of Trichology found that among younger people with hair loss, women showed greater vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D plays an integral role in the creation of new hair follicles, according to health experts.

Hair follicles are the tiny pores from which new hairs grow.

New follicles may help hair maintain thickness and prevent existing hair from falling out prematurely.

Because of this link, ensuring you are getting adequate amounts of vitamin D could help support both hair growth and regrowth.

Food sources rich in vitamin D include:

  • Salmon
  • Herring and sardines
  • Cod liver oil
  • Canned tuna
  • Egg yolks
  • Mushrooms
  • Fortified foods.
